Video accessibility at Vimeo
Empowering access to professional-quality video for all
Updated: September 19, 2025
Vimeo is committed to making our platform accessible to everyone, including individuals with disabilities. We believe that inclusive, accessible design is essential to achieving our mission — to simplify what it takes to make, manage, and share video, all in a single, easy-to-use platform.
Our accessibility standards
Vimeo strives to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, a globally recognized standard that ensures digital content is usable by people with a wide range of disabilities. These guidelines are referenced by the EN 301 549 standard, which underpins the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and related national laws. We are proud to note that our video player has been designed and developed with a strong focus on meeting WCAG 2.2 Level AA criteria, demonstrating our commitment to cutting-edge accessibility.
Features supporting accessibility
Captions, subtitles, transcripts
Vimeo supports uploading captions and subtitles in multiple languages. Users can activate captions via the “CC” button in the player toolbar and also search transcripts.
Visual design and readability
Meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards with strong color contrast and adaptable text sizing and spacing to ensure clear, comfortable readability across all devices.
Consistent, predictable design
Interface behavior follows consistent patterns while input fields and forms work with assistive technologies for maximum usability and clarity.
Audio descriptions
Vimeo enables descriptive audio track uploads, helping users who are blind or have low vision better understand and engage with visual content.
Screen reader compatibility
Our player works seamlessly with popular screen readers like JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack, with properly labeled controls and elements.
Keyboard shortcuts
The video player operates entirely via keyboard with visible focus indicators and shortcuts for easy access to all video playback controls.
