Creed Update
This week, the Automattic Creed received its first-ever update, which I’ll describe as a minor point upgrade. This is the sentence before and after.
I am in a marathon, not a sprint, and no matter how far away the goal is, the only way to get there is by putting one foot in front of another every day.
Is now.
I am in a marathon, not a sprint; no matter how far away the goal is, the only way to get there is to put one foot in front of the other every day.
As I wrote earlier in our internal P2s, “Always great to bury a gerund.” And now we have a semicolon! It’s all quite exciting. For the backstory, please read Why Your Company Should Have a Creed. I said in 2011 “I’m sure that it will evolve in the future” but I didn’t expect it to be 14 years before the first revision.
Internally at Automattic we’ve debated updating the Creed in dozens of conversations and blog posts, usually in the context of adding a sentence, which I still hope will happen in a future version. But this is a minor update. We’ll see when Creed 2.0 happens.
The private Automattic intranet is one of the most delightful things about working there, which you may consider as well.
Interesting how it is “I”, rather than “We”.
On a side note, why does it seem like you want to go to war with anyone that questions you? What ever happened to vigorous debate creates better solutions, stronger connectivity and a rising tide? I am most certainly going to have my comment blocked for so much as questioning you, but I ask you, even as this does not get posted, why are you so against people that do not believe exactly as you do?
I don’t know why it seems that way, I engage in vigorous debate pretty much all day both inside and outside of Automattic, and I’m constantly updating my worldview based on new information. My philosophy is “strong opinions, loosely held.”
The “I” is perfect. The “We” is made of various “I” after all…

You and me both! I appreciate the openness to revisit and evolve, no matter how many years come to pass. Now to memorize this new phrasing (I will never stop learning).
I love everything about this change!
I’m really glad to see the Creed’s capable of evolution.
Personally, I’ve long maintained that it’s overdue a clause about the importance and value of diversity: a diverse workforce is a superpower for an employer! And beyond that, standing up for diversity is more-important than ever, as many countries and companies roll back their commitments to inclusivity.
Maybe that can happen in fewer than 14 years…
Oh, but what if I really want to put a foot of mine in front of another foot that may or may not belong to me? (Just joking. And love the semicolon! Long live semicolons!)
