This is a slightly speculative issue, but the intention here is to propose getting a Gutenberg-based media editor into core for WordPress 7.0. The overall idea is enable editing media within the editor, in a similar isolated way as to how template parts and patterns can be edited. This is tracked in other issues (and all under the umbrella of Phase 3: Media Library), so this iteration issue is to communicate proposed scope for 7.0.
Scope and pre-requisites
In order to achieve this, there’ll need to be a package that supports cropping, dedicated fields for editing and viewing the data associated with media items (caption, description, alt text, file name, format, size, dimensions, etc), and finally the editing of media items will need to be integrated into the editor.
