About
The song is based on the story of Olga of Kiev, she was a saint and ruled Kievan Rus, a territory that covered regions present day Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, after her husband, Igor’s, murder by a neighboring tribe known as the Drevlians. She ruled in her son’s stead until he was of age and she is known for her merciless subjugation of the Drevlians as revenge for the murder of her husband.
Despite her grandson being the first ruler to formally adopt Christianity as the state religion, Olga was the first in the family to be baptized. It is speculated that she chose to do so in Constantinople, by then Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII, as a way of deterring marriage proposals from him. Since it would be seen as “spiritually incestuous” to marry someone you baptized.
