The ITU AI/ML in 5G Challenge offers carefully curated problem statements, a mix of real-world and simulated data, technical webinars, mentoring, and hands-on sessions. Teams participating in the Challenge enable, create, train and deploy ML models for communication networks. This enables participants to not only showcase their talent, test their concepts on real data and real-world problems, and compete for global recognition including prize money and certificates, but also enter the world of ITU standards by mapping their solutions to our specifications.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering had the privilege of hosting ITU Build-a-thon 4.0, in association with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as part of the AI India Summit on February 6, 2026. Hosting this event provided valuable exposure for students to real-world technological challenges and strengthened collaboration between academia and international organizations. I sincerely appreciate the support of ITU, DoT, MeitY, the organizing team, and our student volunteers in making this initiative a success.
Hosting the WiFo Challenge in collaboration with ITU has been a highly meaningful and rewarding experience for our team. We are especially grateful for ITU’s strong support throughout the process. The close collaboration played an important role in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the competition.
We had a great experience hosting the build-a-thon in collaboration with ITU. The event fostered innovation and practical problem-solving among participants. The outcomes were promising, with teams developing impactful solutions, and the mentoring sessions with ITU experts added significant value through their guidance and insights. Overall, it was a very rewarding collaboration, and we look forward to more such initiatives.
I'm very happy to share my experience and learning: It is a great honor to participate in the meticulously organized 2025 Synesthesia of Machines (SoM) Challenge by the ITU. This competition not only allowed us to successfully validate the immense potential of foundation model, but also provided us with invaluable insights at the forefront of Integrated Sensing and Communication. Furthermore, the overall experience throughout the competition was excellent, and the platform provided was incredibly smooth to use.
I’m a health tech enthusiast and my UNDP R42 group’s work is on an AI in 5G mobile chatbot providing COVID-19 information. My work spans Africa and Europe, and I aim to reach more regions to influence global markets and society, young and old. ITU has been fantastic in bringing together such dynamic participants to take part in innovations for 2020 challenges.
The ITU AI/ML in 5G Challenge has provided a great opportunity to bring together standardization activities with academia by allowing students and professionals to solve important problems in communications. In particular, the challenge has led to obtaining very interesting results that may open the door to revolutionize the way communications are understood. For the Dynamic Channel Bonding problem, the application of Deep Learning models accounts for a significant breakthrough in the field.
I feel ecstatic to say that my participation in the ITU AI/ ML in 5G Challenge has been a great learning experience. It’s been a good opportunity to work on the exploratory problems in wireless communication and trying to find solutions to them using AI/ ML approaches.
